Piccolo and Chalumeau are the names, respectively, of the pets of the two artists to whom this composition is dedicated. The music suggests the antics of Piccolo*, a cat, and Chalumeau, a dog*, on a fictitious encounter in a living room of a gracious home, complete with a piano. The score is marked Allegro, con ha pisciato (which may or may not be translated “Quick, with paws”) and Grazioso, “gracefully.”
Please be assured that no animals were harmed during the composition, rehearsal, or performance of Piccolo and Chalumeau.
