Wind Sculptures is a programmatic concerto in three movements for trombone and symphonic band. Each movement suggests a fictitious self-portrait of an imaginary artist and is designated by the title of the sculpture expressed in the music.
The first movement, “The Constructivist,” suggests a phase of artistic development in the professional life
of the sculptor.
“Soldier’s Reminiscence,” suggests reflections on a past stage in the artist's personal life.
The title of the third movement, “The Ecstatic Contestant,” suggests an artist in prize competition.
Implicit in the cyclical return of musical materials representing the third imaginary sculpture is the cumulative effect of one’s life and work on the mature output of an artist.
